Timetable of Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery – FMAS

Training will be conducted from Monday to Saturday except Sundays. So, the total effective training days for FMAS will be 12 days.

Training will also not be held on National Holidays – Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Holi & Diwali, which will be covered in additional working day.




Day 1

Demonstration of Laparoscopic Instruments Design (Part I):
Access instrument including Veress needle, Hassons
cannula, Ports and Reducers. Dissecting instruments,

Basic Laparoscopy Skills with Top Gun Drill Laparoscopic
hands-on exercise to learn bimanual hand & eye
coordination, ambidexterity and depth perception using
instruments in both hands.

Principles of sterilization and disinfection of Laparoscopic
instruments.

including needle holders, Clip applicator, Hemo Lock.
Instruments used with RF energy sources, Harmonic &

Basic Laparoscopy Skills with Top Gun Drill hands-on
exercise to learn bimanual hand & eye coordination,
ambidexterity and depth perception using instruments in
both hands.

Importance of Ergonomics, Task Analysis and Engineering in
Laparoscopic Surgery.

Demonstration of Optical instruments used in minimal
access surgery including telescopes with different
diameters, different visual axes and different numbers of rod
lenses. Different types of cameras, including single-chip and
three-chip camera. Differences between Standard Definition
and High Definition cameras. Various types of Standard
Definition and High Definition monitors. Various types of light
source like Halogen, Xenon and LED and demonstration of
types of light source cables (fiber-optic and gel cables) , 3D
Laparoscopy.

Demonstration of correct handling of Laparoscopic Camera /
Light source cable, focusing and white balance.

Demonstration of extracorporeal Roeder’s, Meltzer’s knot for
free structures followed by practice of laparoscopic
extracorporeal knot over appendix and fallopian tube.

Hands-on practice of laparoscopic extracorporeal Meltzers
knot for continuous vascular and avascular structures like
cystic duct, cystic artery, splenic artery, renal artery or uterine
artery

Laparoscopic Insufflator & Quadro – manometric Principles
of Microprocessor – Controlled Digital Insufflator in the OT
setting. Understanding, pneumoperitoneum pressure, gas
flow rates and volume of gas used. Detection and Prevention
of Gas Leaks and avoiding complications. ETC02
monitoring and measures to control ETC02. Gas embolism
and its management including Durant’s manoeuvre.

for fundoplication, burch suspension, myomectomy, partial

tuboplasty, bowel anastomosis, vault closure, enterotomy
Trainee Doctor Course Supervisor repair, bladder injury and pyeloplasty.

Electro Surgical generator and RF monopolar and bipolar
current. Understanding burn injuries, caused by insulation
failure, direct coupling, capacitative coupling, direct thermal
spread. Prevention of burn injuries.

Demonstration of Harmonic Scalpel and principles of
conversion of mechanical energy (vibration) to thermal
energy. Safe manipulation of harmonic probe. Discussion on
advanced energy sources like Thunder beat (Hybrid energy
source), Ligasure, Argon beamer, plasma kinetic energy (Bipolar resectoscope) and lasers.
